I left school in 1961 and qualified as a solicitor in 1967. I worked in the City of London for six years. I was then appointed as a director of a machine tool group of companies. Within two years, I returned to the City as a partner of a medium sized law firm. A few years later, I started my known City law practice and retired as senior partner in 1996. Four years later, I retired from the law completely.

In the 1960s, there was little need for a solicitor to have a university degree, yet I always regretted not having experienced a university education. Upon retirement, my wife, Linda, encouraged me to pursue further education as a mature student. I took a degree in American Studies at Brunel University, London. I graduated in 2004 with a first class honours degree and was awarded a Masters in Research degree at Brunel in 2005. I am now in my third year of a PhD at Birmingham University.

In 2004, I became editorial assistant to The Journal of American Studies. I have recently retired from this post. Some 20 years ago, I helped found and remain a trustee of Teenage Cancer Trust, which helps teenager suffering from cancer, leukaemia and other malignant diseases. I have been married for 33 years and am the proud father of two daughters, aged 29 and 26.
